How a Facebook Post Kickstarted My Learning Journey
I still remember scrolling through Facebook one evening when a post caught my eye. It was about the Upskill Program by We Connect The Dots (WCTD). Something inside me clicked, and I thought, “Why not?” I applied, not knowing that this small decision would lead to valuable learning and growth in my professional journey.
Hands-On Learning and New Tools
The program was a whirlwind of learning and growth. I got hands-on experience with tools I had only heard about before: Microsoft Power Apps, Power Automate, Canva, and a variety of AI tools that opened my eyes to what’s possible in today’s digital world. Each session introduced me to new tools and capabilities I hadn’t explored before.
But it wasn’t just about learning tools. The program emphasized projects, teamwork, and resilience training. There were moments when challenges felt overwhelming: tight deadlines, technical hiccups, or team disagreements. But the resilience exercises we practiced taught me how to stay calm, adapt, and keep pushing forward.
The Lunara Project: Teamwork and Resilience
My very first group project was building a website for a skincare brand called Lunara. It became not only a lesson in collaboration but also a challenge that taught me persistence. I remember late afternoons we spent brainstorming, testing layouts, and figuring out how to make everything come together. Facing those hurdles taught me how to approach challenges with confidence.
Building More Skills, One Project at a Time
After Lunara, we didn’t stop there. We built several more websites, each project teaching us new skills, sharpening our problem-solving abilities, and strengthening our teamwork. It was amazing to see ideas come to life: websites people could actually explore and interact with.
From Learning to Applying Skills at WCTD
The learning didn’t end when the program officially concluded. For my workforce experience, I joined WCTD as an intern, diving into data cleanup and visualization using Power BI. I also applied my Canva skills to create social media content, another way to bring creativity into my work. The Upskill program offered Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals (PL 900) and Prompt Engineering certifications. I proudly passed both and added to my portfolio.
Today, I continue building on that experience at WCTD, applying the skills I picked up in the Upskill Program every day. It’s incredible to think that one Facebook post led me to this program and helped me discover skills and creativity I didn’t know I had. It also deepened my understanding of workforce development and how nonprofit innovation can create meaningful, real-world opportunities through technology and learning.
Reflection: Growth Beyond Skills
Looking back, this journey wasn’t just about mastering tools or building websites. It was about gaining self-assurance, learning teamwork, practicing resilience, and discovering what I’m truly capable of.
If you’ve ever thought about joining this program, take the leap, and you might uncover skills, creativity, and potential you didn’t know you had. From my experience, it’s more than an upskill, it gave me hands-on abilities and the confidence to keep growing professionally.
